Hoi An is easy to enjoy, but first-time visitors often make the same handful of mistakes. Here is how to avoid them.
- Staying only one night. A day trip shows you the old streets and little else. Two or three nights lets you add the beach, the countryside and a day trip.
- Ignoring the rainy season. From roughly September to December the region sees heavy rain, and the Ancient Town can flood in October and November. Check the forecast and keep your plans flexible.
- Seeing the town only at night. The lanterns are beautiful, but early morning is when the streets are quiet and the light is best for photographs.
- Rushing your tailoring. Good tailoring needs at least two fittings. Order on your first day, not your last.
- Skipping the countryside. Rice fields, Tra Que vegetable village and the Cam Thanh coconut forest are minutes away by bicycle.
- Forgetting the Ancient Town ticket. The ticket supports conservation and is required for the heritage houses, assembly halls and museums.
- Dressing carelessly at temples. Cover shoulders and knees when you enter pagodas, assembly halls and family chapels.
- Not agreeing on prices first. Confirm the price before a boat ride, a cyclo tour or a market purchase.
- Underestimating the sun. Midday heat from May to August is intense. Plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon.
- Overlooking the beaches. An Bang, Cua Dai and Binh Minh beaches are a short ride from town and offer a very different pace.
Plan for a slower rhythm, mix heritage with nature, and Hoi An will give you far more than a quick photo stop.
