Hoi An is one of the most affordable destinations in Vietnam for the quality of experience it offers. With a little planning you can eat very well, see the heritage sites and enjoy the beach without stretching your budget.

Getting around

  • Walk the Ancient Town. The historic centre is compact and largely closed to motor traffic, so walking is the best way to see it.
  • Rent a bicycle. Many hotels and homestays lend bicycles for free or for a small daily fee. They are ideal for the rice fields, Tra Que village and An Bang Beach.
  • Use ride-hailing apps. App-based cars and motorbike taxis show the price in advance and are usually cheaper than hailing on the street.

Eating well for less

Local specialities such as cao lau, mi Quang, com ga (chicken rice) and banh mi are sold at street stalls and small family restaurants for a fraction of restaurant prices. The central market food hall is a good place to try several dishes in one sitting. Look for places that are busy with local customers.

Sightseeing

The Ancient Town entrance ticket includes a set number of heritage sites, such as old merchant houses, assembly halls and museums. Choose your stops carefully and keep the ticket with you. Many of the best experiences are free: sunrise at the beach, cycling through the countryside, and evening walks among the lanterns.

More ways to save

  • Travel in the shoulder months, when room rates are lower than in the peak season.
  • If you are having clothes tailored, compare two or three shops and agree on the price and number of fittings before ordering.
  • Carry small notes in Vietnamese dong for markets and street food.
  • Refill your water bottle at your accommodation or at cafes that offer refills.
