Hoi An has neither an airport nor a train station. Almost every visitor arrives through Da Nang, which has an international airport and a station on the main north-south railway. The Ancient Town is about thirty kilometres to the south, and the journey usually takes around forty-five minutes.

Private car or hotel transfer

The simplest choice, especially after a flight. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your hotel. Most hotels and resorts in Hoi An can arrange this, and the price is fixed in advance.

Taxi and ride-hailing

Metered taxis wait outside the airport and the railway station, and ride-hailing apps work throughout Da Nang. With an app you see the fare before you confirm, which removes any need to negotiate.

Shuttle bus

Several companies run shared shuttle buses between Da Nang and Hoi An, with pick-up from the airport or central hotels. They cost less than a private car but run on fixed schedules, so book ahead and allow extra time.

Motorbike or bicycle

Confident riders can rent a motorbike and follow the coastal road, which is wide and scenic. Make sure you hold a licence that is valid in Vietnam and that your travel insurance covers riding.

Stops worth making on the way

  • My Khe and Non Nuoc beaches – long stretches of sand right beside the coast road.
  • Marble Mountains – caves, pagodas and viewpoints about a third of the way to Hoi An.
  • An Bang Beach – a relaxed beach with cafes and seafood restaurants just before you reach town.

If you arrive late at night, arrange your transfer before you travel. The road is quiet and well lit, and you will be in Hoi An in well under an hour.
