Tra Que is a small farming village about three kilometres north of Hoi An Ancient Town, set between the De Vong River and a lagoon on the way to An Bang Beach. For generations its families have grown the basil, mint, coriander, lettuce and other greens served with almost every local dish. The village is known for growing its vegetables with river weed as a natural fertiliser.

What you can do in Tra Que

  • Walk the garden paths. Neat rows of herbs stretch across the village, and farmers are usually happy to explain what they are growing.
  • Try farming for an hour. Many families invite visitors to rake the soil, plant seedlings and water the beds with twin watering cans carried on a shoulder pole.
  • Join a cooking session. Several village kitchens teach dishes such as banh xeo and tam huu, a local roll of pork, shrimp and herbs.
  • Relax with a herbal foot bath. A warm soak with fresh herbs is a popular way to finish a visit.

Getting there

The easiest way to reach Tra Que is by bicycle. The ride from the Ancient Town takes around fifteen minutes along Hai Ba Trung Street and passes rice fields and water buffalo on the way. You can continue the same road to An Bang Beach and make a full morning of it.

When to visit

Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the farmers are working and the light is soft. The gardens are green all year, but the months from February to May are especially pleasant. Wear a hat, bring water, and ask before photographing people at work.
