Many travellers visit Hoi An as a day trip from Da Nang or as a stop on a longer journey. One day is not enough to see everything, but with an early start and a sensible route you can experience the heart of the town.

Morning: Heritage on foot (7:00 – 11:00)

Arrive early, when the light is soft and the streets are quiet. Buy the Ancient Town ticket and choose your sites: the Japanese Covered Bridge, one old merchant house, one assembly hall and one museum make a balanced set. Walk Tran Phu and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets and stop for a Vietnamese coffee overlooking the river.

Midday: Eat like a local (11:00 – 13:00)

Hoi An’s dishes are a reason to visit in themselves. Order cao lau, white rose dumplings or chicken rice, and pick up a banh mi for later. The central market is the quickest place to try several specialities at once.

Afternoon: Choose one experience (13:00 – 17:00)

Evening: Lanterns and the river (17:00 – 21:00)

Return to the Ancient Town before sunset. As darkness falls, thousands of silk lanterns light the streets. Take a short boat ride, release a paper lantern on the water, and have dinner on the riverfront before you leave.

Make the day easier

  • Arrange your return transport in advance if you are travelling back to Da Nang at night.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; the old streets are best explored on foot.
  • If you can, stay one night. The town is at its most beautiful late in the evening and early in the morning, after the day visitors have gone.
